How old were you when you decided to pursue your current career path and what inspired you?
I recall when I was 14 years of age in Grade 9, I had a meeting with my guidance teacher to help me select my Grade 10 subjects. Back then the dream was to become a medical doctor, as that’s what my response was when my guidance teacher asked me what I wanted to study after grade 12. Having looked at my Mathematics marks at the time, the guidance teacher suggested I look at other options. Before finally selecting subjects for Grade 10, our High School organised that all of us in Grade 9 at the time complete an aptitude test which we did. My results indicated that I would be better suited to study law.
During Grade 11 before applying for varsity entrance, I attended a career day at the University of Johannesburg. The law faculty had a stall where prospective students could ask questions on studying law. It was during that time that I finally decided to study law.
What challenges did you face (or are facing) / had to overcome in your journey?
In varsity, the biggest challenge was always having to raise registration fees and then paying outstanding fees before registration every year for my LL.B. Currently, the biggest challenge is having to navigate through the corporate world where people have different views to yours on how to get things done.
What has been your biggest driver/motivator?
The great sense of accomplishment after getting things done.
What advice or key learning points from your journey would you like people to take on to theirs?
Having someone to guide you through your journey is very critical.
Any advice for a young person from a rural area / township who currently has no clue where to even start when choosing a career path?
A starting point is always where you find yourself before making your way elsewhere. So start by getting any little information you have in your environment to use it to move to the next.
