Importance of Grade 11 results

By Boitumelo Potsane

Tertiary applications open early every year, and when applying the first results you use to apply are your grade 11 results. This is for universities to see if you qualify for the course(s) you’re to apply for. It’s therefore important to make sure that your grade 11 results meet at least the minimum requirements for the course(s) you wish to apply for, although it’s always best to aim to do better than the minimum requirements. The higher your marks the better the chances of getting into the program of your choice after matric.

As soon as you commence your university application, as mentioned before, the first results required are your grade 11 final marks. This is to assess whether you qualify for the course of your dreams or not. If you don’t meet the minimum requirements based on your final grade 11 marks, depending on the university you applied at, your application will automatically be unsuccessful or you will be put on the waiting list until the final matric results. Therefore, the safer option is MAKING SURE YOU DO WELL IN GRADE 11.

How do you check if you qualify for a course?

Universities use ‘Admission Point Score (APS)’ to help prospective students check if they meet the minimum requirements. The minimum requirements are found on each universities ‘prospectus’, these requirements differ between universities.

Our advice is that you start calculating your APS as soon as you get your March grade 11 results. In this way, in every term you will see where you need to improve your marks in order to better your chances of studying your dream course. This way you will start working on your final grade 11 results early.
